Colegio Salesianos San Rafael in Elche – Renovation of Primary School Bathrooms

The Salesianos San Rafael School in Elche has completed a complete refurbishment of the bathrooms for primary school students during the months of July and August, before the start of the 2024/2025 school year. This intervention has completely renovated the sanitary facilities, improving their functionality, aesthetics and durability for the daily use of students.

Project Stages

The refurbishment process was carried out following a series of well-defined steps, from the initial demolition to the installation of new elements, ensuring a complete and high quality transformation.

1. Demolition and Dismantling

.
The first phase consisted of a complete demolition of the old bathrooms, which included:

• • Demolition of partition walls between toilets

.

• Removal of the old tiling and cladding.
• Removal of the false ceilings.
• Dismantling of the pre-existing false ceilings.

This allowed the space to be completely cleared to start the new works to be carried out.

2. Installation of new plumbing and drainage

.
With the space freed up, a total renovation of the plumbing installation was carried out:

• • The old plumbing network, which no longer met current standards,

was dismantled.

• A new underground plumbing network was installed, which optimises the flow of water and sanitation.
• The bathrooms were fitted with new plumbing fixtures and fittings.
• The bathrooms were equipped with new toilets with a modern and functional design.
• In addition, vandal-proof built-in flushing valves were installed, improving both the efficiency of the water system and the aesthetic design as they are concealed in the walls.

3. Gypsum plasterboard wall cladding

In order to safely and efficiently integrate the vandal-resistant recessed plumbing fixtures, the walls were clad with gypsum plasterboard, an effective solution that provides a strong and clean surface. This technique ensures a durable installation ready to receive the final finishes.

4. Flooring and Tiling

The choice of finishing materials was fundamental to guarantee the durability and aesthetics of the installations. We opted for:

• Terrazzo paving in 40×40 cm format in the access area, which provides resistance to wear and tear and easy maintenance.
• Porcelain stoneware flooring in 60×60 cm format, a material that is highly resistant to humidity, ideal for areas with high traffic.
• White natural stone tiling in 30×60 cm format, which provides luminosity on the four walls of both toilets.

5. Division of Toilets with Phenolic Toilets

To improve the privacy and design of the bathrooms, the toilets were divided with green phenolic material cubicles. This material is ideal for school environments as it is water resistant, easy to clean and durable, as well as adding a touch of colour to the space.

6. Installation of False Metal Ceilings

.
The new design included the installation of a 60×60 cm modular metal false ceiling. This type of ceiling not only improves the aesthetics of the bathrooms, but also facilitates access to facilities to install new luminaires of the same format, 60x60cm.

7. Replacement of Access Doors to the building

.
Finally, a renovation of the access doors to the building between the two bathrooms was carried out:

• Two-leaf hinged doors with thermal break were installed, with clear and butyral glass, a similar solution to doors installed in previous renovations at the centre.
